"AH DUNNO!"

As another unlamented year of the 21st Century Blunderocracy draws to its close, the denizens of the burrow are taking stock. Their inventory and recommendations will be reported in due course. Maybe a Project for a New America, to replace the shattered Project for a New American Century? Well, we can dream, can't we?

President Bush has said that Saddam Hussein's execution is "an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy". A few more executions of rogue presidents could help spread democracy's progress around the world - especially in the Western hemisphere.

Indeed, Anticant, indeed. My being against the death penalty, I would put them to the stocks as a public example, as they did in the Middle Ages.

I'm glad you mentioned this, anticant. I was thinking about it, but, oddly for me, it doesn't seem a subject for silliness.

I wanted to say how proud I am to be a member of the civilised Western world, and how pleased that unhelpful leaders may be executed on the whim of the self-styled leader of that world.

It just wonderful to be a member of such a noble enterprise.

Thanks, Jose and Szwagier. I hope to develop this and other related themes, seriously but not too solemnly I hope, in my New Year postings.

The reason I started blogging on CiF in the first place, about six months ago, was my increasing frustration at feeling forced to be on the "Wrong Side" because of the crazy antics of our so-called 'leaders', whose behaviour increasingly resembles that of Hitler and Mussolini, who were the "Wrong Side" when I was a child and WE were then on the "Right Side". But we aren't any more, until these reckless renegades are reined in. Indeed, where is the "Right Side" now?

I hope nobody will promote killing on my site.

Right, that term must undergo a complete overhaul and a new definition assigned to it. There are no longer, in my opinion, any political right or lef or centre. Every time more and more rights are negated to human beings, animals or Nature.

Let's better leave the terms as originally conceived for the two sides of our body, of any object or visual scope.

Perhaps, like was the use with Western films, speaking of the baddies or the goodies would be the solution, a little childish though.

But we after all are children, aren't we?

Well I've posted as much on zola's site but, for what it's worth, I'd just like to add my agreement here with what's being said by your good selves.

Jose, I agree with you - but words are as slippery as eels, and however much dictionary makers and other PC people struggle to define them, people will go on using them as they please on the Humpty Dumpty principle.

Actually, I was thinking of 'Right' and 'Wrong', not 'Right' and 'Left'.

A very interesting article on today's "Information Clearing House" is:

My goodness, anticant! I find myself agreeing with you twice in one day. Wonders will never cease! :o)

I'm off topic here Anticant but I just noticed your response to BS on Pike's "Ministry of Sinistry" thread. I wanted to ask, what is a Beadle?

I've heard the term bandied around a couple of times but can only associate it with a rather irritating TV presenter. I'm sure I'm safe in the assumption that it doesn't refer to him?

A parish officer, usually the head of the local Work House. An officious, rather stupid functionary. The immortal specimen is Mr Bumble, the Master of the Work House in Dickens' "Oliver Twist", who is scandalised when Oliver asks for more porridge.

Trousers : cannot speak for Anticant of course but the beadle ( of the Parish) was not a penitent judge and copper which was why Mr Punch ( in the wonderful childrens stories) set upon him. The beadle of the Parish was after Mr Punch because punch fed the baby to the crocodile. We kids loved that. Punch won in the end by knocking out the Beadle with a stick on the head.

Thank you both, kind sirs. I've learned a number of things today. Which, Zola, relates in a small way to your post the other day.

There is an interesting piece about Beadles on Wikipedia.

So it's crocodiles now, is it, Zola? Are you scheming to take lavenderblue and Suzon kayaking in crocodile-infested waters?

The Beadle has been alerted.

Mr Punch sings :
" Those Liverpool judies have got us in tow ... And it's row, row bullies row those Liverpool judies have got us in tow."
So that is the Punch and Judy thing done fur now.

Then it will be off to hunt the shoals of herring.

That Bar Steward beadle cannot get me there!
